With the release of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises), effective July 1st, new pricing and branding for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 has been announced.

New Dynamics customers will not be able to purchase Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 (latest Dynamics AX version before the Enterprise release), but existing Dynamics AX 2012 R3 customers will have the ability to add new users using their existing license. Of course, this change raises more questions in the Dynamics Partner Community beyond licensing.

PRICING FAQs:

Q: Does this price increase impact AX 2012?
A: Yes. Due to the rebranding of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises), there will be a price increase along with new mapping of the SKUs.

Q: Will quotes based on previous pricing be honored by Microsoft?
A: No. Microsoft does not control prices or commercial terms to the end customers. Partners can provide quotes to customers as needed according to their business, taking in to account the SPA (Solution Provider Agreement) agreement conditions. Therefore, honoring quotes is solely the responsibility of the partner. Partners should have plenty of time to adjust their internal sales processes based on the notice provided hereby.

Q: Will Business Value Discounts be available on Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises)?
A: Business Value Discounts will continue to be available for existing customers purchasing from Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3. However, Business Value Discounts will not be available on Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises).

Q: Are Enhancement prices impacted by the changes?
A: Yes. New license purchases on and after 1 July 2017 will be calculated off the new price list. There is no impact for existing customers Enhancement fees generated on orders placed before 1 July 2017.

Q: How will existing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Dynamics customers be impacted by these price changes?
A: Existing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 customers who purchase from the Dynamics Price List will not have an impact to their existing licenses or their associated protected list price. Therefore, if such customers remain current on their Enhancement Plan, the fees associated with their existing licenses will not be impacted. If an existing customer wishes to purchase additional Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 licenses after the launch of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises), they will need to use the updated pricing. Note, the transition formulas for the Task – Limited Upgrade users and devices in the May Licensing deck.

Q: Are the changes impacting all new purchases for new and existing customers?
A: Yes. After 1 July 2017, all licenses will be invoiced according to the new pricing.

SKUs, ENHANCEMENT PLANS AND PLANNING TRANSITIONS FAQs

Q: Is the Dynamics AX 2012 SKU structure changing?
A: Yes, effective April 1, 2017 the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Dynamics Price List and the Formula Based Product Version Upgrade/Transition policy was updated to include:

(a.) Discontinuation of the following SKUs: Task User and Task Device in BVL (Business Value Licensing);
(b.) Introduction of the following SKUs with revised upgrade rights and pricing:

i. Task User – Limited Upgrade and Task Device– Limited Upgrade.
ii. AX 2012 R3 New AX 2012 R3 SKU
iii. Task User Task User – Limited Upgrade
iv. Task Device Task Device – Limited Upgrade

Q: Are customers required to be active on an Enhancement Plan to move to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises)?
A: Yes. Additionally, customers will be required to remain active on an Enhancement Plan to have continued access to their license.

Q: Are customers required to be active on an Enhancement Plan to access Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises)?
A: Yes. If a customer lapses on their Enhancement Plan they will lose access to Lifecycle Services (LCS) and their use right to the Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises) solution and will be required to revert to the last supported version of Microsoft Dynamics AX.

Q: Can Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 customers transition directly to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises)?
A: Yes. Existing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 customers who are current on the Enhancement Plan will no longer be able to upgrade/transition to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. Customers must upgrade/transition directly to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises).

Q: How do I request a transition to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises) Edition for my customers?
A: Partners can process transition orders via Order Central:

  1. Upgrade Transition for Microsoft Dynamics AX customers;
  2. Product Line Transition for Microsoft Dynamics GP;
  3. Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and Microsoft Dynamics SL. For questions or further support contact your Regional Operations Center (ROC).
